Bill Finch answers gardening questions

Q: Of late I have been having a problem that perhaps you can help me with, perhaps not. You see, for the last couple of weeks I have only been able to receive P. Allen Smith and other floral-related programming on my television, all with a purplish hue, to the point I'm beginning to feel like a bloomin' idiot! Could the problem possibly be with my dish antenna? Take a look at this photo and tell me what you think. I value your opinion.

A: P. Allen Smith, of course, is a little too dandy to make use of the latest garden fashion sweeping the South. But there must be thousands of abandoned dish antennas in Alabama just begging to find a higher use. I used my dad's discarded dish antenna to make the roof of a chicken coop, but I can imagine a very attractive satellite dish gazebo surrounded by used-tire planters (Felder Rushing, the ball is in your court).

Madrid 'to read' under stars

Madrid - Poems will hang from street lamps and bookstores will stay open until the wee hours next week as the Madrid region celebrates International Book Day, organisers said on Monday.

More than 600 writers, musicians and artists will join in next Monday's festivities, which feature 350 events such as round-table discussions, lectures and poetry readings, said Santiago Fisas, cultural affairs director for the Madrid regional government.

Public libraries and a total of 120 bookstores across the region will extend their hours to bring readers and authors together.

Spanish poet Antonio Gamoneda, recipient of the 2006 Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's highest literary honour, will meet with high school and university students.

Fuencarral Street in downtown Madrid will be decked out with hanging books of poetry so pedestrians are surrounded by verse, Fisas said.
